The carnival of Gaggio Montano Mirragio is one of the most beautiful manifestations I’ve ever attended. It’s an annual carnival organised in Italy exactly in a wonderful country side on a mountain called Gaggio Montano in Bologna. This mountain is a kind of theatre stage for the whole day and all the attendance are characters in a very large beautiful play.During the whole day, the characters choose their costume and roles that they want to play on the stage, each one has his own choice. In the middle of the hill, there are people depicting the earth with its daily activities, workers, dancers and characters from different eras and areas. Figures from pre-history, Roman era, middle age..etc and from different parts of the world like Greece, Persia, middle east, Europe and America, Africa, play all over the place.
Going up of the hill, there is heaven, beautiful and colourful where other characters play the role of angels with beautiful costume. Their role is to prepare drinks and sweets for good people on earth.
Going down the hill, there is hell. With all it’s horrible images in all religious thoughts. In this stage, the characters illustrate the image of hell full of devils in red and black colours. Sinful people and those of the wrong deeds are serving the devil in a sloppy, messy dirty costume and black faces.
The carnival is also an occasion for dancing and singing, crews from different parts of Italy are
giving wonderful shows for the public the whole day like, belly dancing, gypsy dancing and others.
What I liked most is “the corrupted church”. The characters show the church as corrupted and full of paradoxical ideas, we went to have lunch in that “church” where some beautiful nuns wearing indecent clothes.
It’s also important to mention that people in Gaggio Montano were really nice and helpful.
